With Halloween upon us I was thinking of all the things I needed to do to prepare for the holiday when I realized how much trick-or-treating is just like content marketing. You may think that idea is absurd (and maybe it is) but you will have to keep reading to see if this will be a trick or a treat…

We spend time and money decorating and picking out the best candy so when the trick-or-treaters come to our house they are excited about how cool the house looks and the type of candy we have.

We do the same thing with websites! We spend a lot of time preparing for our website launch by picking out the right content, design and calls to action so visitors are excited about everything we have to offer. Launching a new website may not be as fun as picking out candy and it certainly takes a lot more time so it is essential to prepare accordingly and plan everything out.

Its Halloween night and we have our candy and our house is decorated but no one is ringing the doorbell. Do you live in a rural area where there are not a lot of people? Did you forget to turn on your porch light so everyone knows you are participating? You are now stuck with all this delicious candy and a decorated house but no one is around to see it.

That could easily happen with a website too! If you have a niche market it is important to make sure everyone in that market knows who you are because every website visitors will count in the success of your website. Your audience needs to know who you are, that you are open for business and you have products/service that will be beneficial to them. Just building a website is not enough, you will need to prepare a marketing plan for after the website is live to drive traffic to the site.

Once again, its Halloween night and you decide to try something different and go where you know people will be to hand out candy. This could be at a community center, the church, mall or school – there are lots of places where people go to trick-or-treat.

Same is true for digital marketing! If you spent the time and money to develop content for people and they are not coming to you then you can go to them. Find out where your audience is and have a presence there. They may be on Facebook, Twitter or on other websites. Make a plan to get your content in front of them wherever they are.

The similarities are spooky!!

  1. Candy & Decorations = Content & Website
  2. Trick-or-Treaters = Website visitors
  3. Smiles & Happy People = Successful Marketing Campaign

Happy Halloween Everyone!
